TAMPA - Business owners, aspiring elected officials, attorneys and a high school student are among the 52 people who applied to fill two short-term positions on the Tampa City Council.

The seats will be left vacant later this month when council members Rose Ferlita and Kevin White leave to assume their duties with the Hillsborough County Commission.

Ten people applied to fill White's seat, which represents east Tampa. They include attorney Warren Dawson, engineer Joe Robinson, Hillsborough County school social worker Lynnette Judge and Sickle Cell Association president Frank Reddick. Judge and Reddick have also filed for election to the City Council in March.

Forty-two people applied for Ferlita's citywide seat, including hair stylist Joseph Citro and former Florida legislator Bob Henriquez. Citro and Henriquez are also candidates for the city elections in March.

More than 30 hopefuls filed their applications in the hours before the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline.

"They were coming in one behind the other," said city clerk support specialist Sonya Johnson.

"This is unreal," said City Clerk Shirley Foxx-Knowles. "It's all right. We've got some wonderful citizens. They want to participate. So that's good."

Architect Ana Wallrapp got her application in at 5 p.m. on the dot.

But Mary Neumeier, who works in the city of Tampa Water Department and is an executive board member for the employee union, arrived in the City Clerk's Office at 5:03 p.m., out of breath and out of time. Her application was turned away.

Other notable names in the mix:

- Bob Clark Jr., owner of a steel company and board member at the troubled Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority.

- Denise Cassedy, a Davis Islands neighborhood activist who fought against expansion of Tampa General Hospital.
threatened by Tampa General executive (hope your family doesn't ever have to come to my hospital, this threat was witnessed by the former city atty.)
- Denise Chavez, owner of the South Tampa restaurant Chavez at Home and daughter of former council member Helen Chavez.

- Former Assistant Attorney General Joseph Bryant, who traveled to Cuba with activist Al Fox.

- Plant High School senior Logan Cobb, who ran for the Hillsborough County School Board.

- Chip Fletcher, an environmental and land use attorney representing Christine Jennings in her 13th Congressional District recount.

- Aria Green, the Tampa fire chief forced to resign by Mayor Pam Iorio.

- Julie Harris, another city employee ousted by Iorio.

- Retired police Maj. Jane Siling, who in 1997 was named the first female deputy chief in department history, but later demoted for late filing of federal grant paperwork.

The five sitting City Council members will select their two new colleagues on Nov. 30. Applicants need four votes to fill the seats. The four-month, part-time job pays about $600 a week.
Is there any surprise about the results, considering this?????
